Korean Feast with Soju & a Presentation on the Restaurant Business

Our panel of food professionals talked about food and running a restaurant business. We were particularly pleased to feature the owner of Miss Korea, a serial entrepreneur, who shared her vison and what has made her business thrive in the competitive K-Town NYC restaurant scene.

Besides learning about the restaurant business, we had a reception, followed by a multi-course Korean feast, paired with soju. Traditional Korean dishes such as japchae, samsek jeon, mandu, sawoo, bulgogi, galbi, ojingeo bokkeum, sinseollo and more filled our dinner tables and our stomachs.  We all left satiated and appreciative of good Korean food and hospitality.

We thank our speakers and miss Korea BBQ for a wonderful meal and great service! View the invitation and see some of the photos from the evening.

Digitally Speaking: A New Reality

Digital media is now the most important source for art, entertainment, news, shopping and social interaction. As we become more mobile, we want access anytime and anywhere, making it necessary to be available in the micro-moment in order to reach the broadest audience and their influencers.

During a mid-summer Friday evening, AWIB members and guests spent quality time at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, listening to a panel of experts discussing changes to organizations with the advent of the digital age.  Angela spoke about a successful Ogilvy campaign; Aditi went over some of the social media she uses and how quickly she is able to respond to customers; and Sree talked about putting the artwork and cultural happenings at the Met on the digital map.

After the discussion and a lively question and answer period, Sree Sreenivasan led a private guided tour through the galleries where we were able to see the Met the way he does.

Annual Procurement Opportunities Conference

AWIB's annual conference for Minority and Women Owned Businesses was a must attend event at BNY Mellon, our long term sponsor and supporter for this annual conference. MWBEs had a chance to network with government buyers and small business owners and pre-qualified vendors had one-on-one appointments with sought after corporations during our corporate matchmaking sessions.

The conference began with a welcome from Claire Scanlon, Vice President, BNY Mellon and the President of AWIB, Bonnie Wong. The guest speakers were Gale Brewer, Manhattan Borough President;  Michael Owh , Director, Mayor's Office of Contract Services; and Scott Stringer , the New York City Comptroller, all of whom shared their support for MWBE programs. The introduction was followed by four workshops with diverse expert panelists; topics included: Doing Business with Corporate America, Selling Made Simple (Refining Your Sales Technique), How MWBEs can become involved in the Affordable Housing Mandate, and Marketing to the Government. Simultaneous to the workshops were the one-on-one appointments between pre-qualified small businesses and Corporate representatives. The exhibition area was open throughout the event, and MWBEs were pleased to be able to speak to government buyers and to gather information on the various government programs. As a special treat for attendees, there was a special Wellness Lounge where we were able to meditate, receive a relaxing massage, and taste organic juices - a perfect quick pick me up in between appointments, workshops, and speaking with the many exhibitors.

Attendees, exhibitors, and corporate buyers were pleased with the connections they were able to make during AWIB's Procurement Opportunities Conference. The workshops were all well received and were certainly beneficial and informative. See photos from the conference here.

Raising the Bar: The Door Between Public and Private Sector
AWIB's annual forum, titled Raising the Bar, highlights Asian women in the legal profession. During our sixth annual legal forum, "Raising the Bar: The Door Between Public and Private Sector", our speakers shared their experiences transitioning between sectors and how their decisions shaped their careers. It was fascinating to hear the challenges they faced and what roads they took to achieve their present leadership roles. Christina Lee worked for the NYS Department of Insurance as an attorney and she is now a high level corporate insurance attorney.  Lisa Lim worked in various state and city housing agencies which contributes to her value as a private attorney specializing in affordable housing. Peggy Kuo has a varied public and private background, all of which prepared her for her present role as a judge.  It is clear that their public service experience was key to the roles they now have. We had a thoughtful Q & A period and attendees had an opportunity to reflect on their own journeys and network with other Asian women.
Panelists: The Hon. Peggy Kuo, United States Magistrate Judge (EDNY); Christina Lee, Deputy General Counsel, AIG; Lisa Lim, Partner, Akerman LLP
Moderator:  Bonnie Wong, President, Asian Women In Business
AWIB thanks the panelists for their participation and Akerman LLP for sponsoring this event.

Born To Lead: Defining Success
AWIB’s corporate leadership forum, Born To Lead: Defining Success, was another well received and inspiring evening. Our annual forum highlights the accomplishments of high powered Asian women executives. This year’s esteemed panelists were Anu Aiyengar, Managing Director and Head of M&A, J.P. Morgan; Archana Jain, Vice President, Verizon Enterprise Solutions; and Elaine Paik, Vice President and Corporate Treasurer, Colgate Palmolive Company. The moderator for the evening was Angela Lee, Assistant Dean, Columbia Business School and Founder, 37 Angels. The panelists were informative, inspirational, and humorous and spoke about what they learned from their failures, addressed some defining successes in their lives, and shared meaningful insights about making it in their respective companies. Angela guided the discussion skillfully and made the evening program enjoyable and informative.
It was quite clear that everyone found the panel discussion stimulating and we had a lively Q&A session.  A reception followed the program and attendees took advantage of it to network while enjoying some hors d'oeuvres and refreshments.

Speak Up & Speak Out : Mastering the Art of Public Speaking
AWIB’s public speaking workshop was led by the founder and CEO of SpeakEtc., Robyn Hatcher.  She is a great coach and facilitator.  Robyn covered all the fundamentals of communication skills ranging from the visual skills such as eye contact, movement and gesture, to vocal skills. She also introduced a unique communication-style system called ActorTypes.
During the intensive 3 hour session, attendees were treated to listening and watching Robyn, an example of a great speaker, and  they were able to practice speaking in front of the class while receiving constructive feedback.  It was clear that everyone was engaged and focused and learned by participating in the many fun and useful hands on exercises.
The written evaluations from the workshop gave Robyn high marks for how she led the workshop and taught them to be better speakers.  Big thanks to Robyn for another amazing workshop. View program flyer and photos
