This scholarship was funded by Esther Yip, in memory of her mother Choi Ying Tong.
Sarina comes from Westwood, Massachusetts and attends Princeton University where she is majoring in Economics with certificates in Finance and Computer Science. She became involved in Asian cultural arts such as dance, martial arts and erhu (Chinese violin) at an early age and developed a passion for promoting cultural diversity. It was this passion that motivated her to create the Westwood Chinese Cultural Night (WCCN) events, an annual performance that has since drawn over 1,000 participants from all across the New England area every year since 2006.
Encouraged by WCCN’s success and after receiving feedback from audience members who were inspired to learn more about Chinese language and culture from the shows, Sarina co-founded the Westwood Chinese School with her mother and sister. The school opened in 2010 and offers Chinese language classes for various experience levels followed by arts classes ranging from brush painting to Chinese yo-yo to dance and more. The school now boasts over 200 students.
Sarina is also very involved in the cultural and arts scene at Princeton, serving as co-president of Global China Connection’s Princeton chapter, treasurer of the Triple 8 Dance Company, and board member of the Taiwanese American Student Association. In addition, Sarina competed in the 2013 America’s National Teenager Scholarship Organization (ANTSO) pageant and was crowned the 2013 ANTSO National Miss titleholder.
