2011 Highlights of Asian Women In Business
2011 marked AWIB’s 16th successful year of helping Asian women achieve their entrepreneurial goals and advance professionally in their chosen fields. From seminars on how to start a business, to corporate leadership development, AWIB members and supporters enjoyed a variety of networking events and learning experiences geared towards helping them develop new skills, meet the right people and enhance their work as professionals and entrepreneurs. In 2012, we will continuously strive to encourage and develop Asian women leaders in business.

AWIB Annual Holiday Party
AWIB celebrated the end of 2011 and the holiday season with both new and old friends. People networked over an extensive and delicious buffet dinner and an open wine/beer bar. The AWIB 16th Anniversary Leadership Awards Ceremony & Dinner
The Leadership Awards Dinner celebrated not only AWIB's accomplishments, but also served as an opportunity to honor prominent Asian women who have shown exemplary leadership as corporate leaders and successful entrepreneurs. This year, seven extraordinary women were recognized. The 2011 theme was "Leading the Way", reflecting the leadership role played by our award winners in their respective fields. This was yet another successful annual dinner for AWIB, with many corporate sponsors, members and supporters in attendance. The inspiring presentations and the professional execution of the event resulted in many accolades for AWIB. The 2011 AWIB Corporate Leadership Award was given to Angela Sun, Chief of Staff to the President & CEO at Bloomberg, and Phoebe H. Yee, Vice President, Design, Related Companies. Winners of the 2011 AWIB Entrepreneurial Leadership Award were JJ Falk, Managing Principal, JJ Falk Design LLC, Ann Harakawa, Principal, Two Twelve, Marie Jhin, MD, CEO & Senior Dermatologist, Premier Dermatology & PIBU Spa, and Dolly Oberoi, CEO, C² Technologies, Inc. The 2011 AWIB Young Entrepreneurial Leadership Award was given to Rebecca Dean, President, Tiny Tots Therapy, Inc. The extensive silent auction was a highlight for many of the attendees and items up for bid ran the gamut from dinner certificates donated by the best restaurants in New York City, to luxury handbags and accessories. Becoming Ginger Rogers
Just in time for the start of season 13 of ABC’s “Dancing With the Stars” AWIB held a special ballroom dance-themed event for everyone. Author and AWIB board member Patrice Tanaka read from her new book, Becoming Ginger Rogers…How Ballroom Dancing Made Me a Happier Woman, a Better Partner and a Smarter CEO. Guests were dazzled and wowed by ballroom dance performances by “World Mambo” and “World Salsa” Champion Emmanuel Pierre-Antoine and his partner, Liana Churilova, who have been featured on“Dancing With the Stars,” “America’s Ballroom Challenge” (PBS) and “The View,” among other national TV shows. Everyone had fun learning to Mambo with Emmanuel and Liana. Patrice chatted with attendees and an autographed copies of her new book “Becoming Ginger Rogers…”. The Main Ingredient: Starting a Successful Restaurant featured a number of industry professionals who gave participants a rare look at key strategies for planning a successful restaurant. They discussed everything from financing to effective food service management. The unique and intimate workshop outlined how to start a restaurant establishment. It was held inside Manhattan's spacious and luxurious Pranna Restaurant. Participants had the opportunity to hear from talented and enterprising Asian women restaurateurs who, through their culinary passions and entrepreneurial vision, are transforming their dreams into reality in this dynamic and thriving industry. The participating Panelists included: Romella Haiyder, Vice President, PNC Business Banking; Jennifer Maeng, President, Temple Catering; Andrew Rigie, EVP, NYS Restaurant Association; Payal Sharma, Co-Owner, Pranna Restaurant; and Motoko Watanabe, Owner, Zenkichi Restaurant. In addition to the panel discussion, guests were served a multi-course dinner featuring the Chef's bold Southeast Asian-inspired dishes.

AWIB's Annual Procurement Opportunities Conference for Minority and Women Business Owners contained a full schedule of workshops on topics such as procurement, certification and growing your business. Attendees participated in workshops, networked with exhibitors and other business owners. Those who submitted pre-qualification forms had private matchmaking appointments with corporate buyers. Opening remarks were made by the U.S. General Services Administration Regional Director Denise L. Pease. There were multiple interactive panel discussions on Corporate, City, State & Federal Agencies & Public Authorities selling opportunities. In the afternoon, business owners who have been successful in obtaining government and corporate contracts shared their experience, insight, and what actions they took to be competitive. This once a year conference offers access to buyers from federal/state/local government agencies and Fortune 1000 companies. The participating matchmakers included: AIG, BNY Mellon, Bloomingdale, Campbell Soup Company, CBS Corporation, Colgate-Palmolive, Con Edison, Dun & Bradstreet, Emblem Health, Enterprise Rent-A-Car, Fannie Mae, Fresh Direct, IBM, National Grid, NBC Universal, Novartis Pharmaceuticals, Tishman Construction Corporation, Weil, Gotshal & Manges. One-on-one meetings for pre-qualified vendors with buyers from corporations, ranging from industries such as food, apparel, office equipment, and technology to construction and engineering.

AWIB's Seventh Annual Corporate Asian Women's Leadership Summit - Born to Lead: Building a Legacy - featured a panel of high-level Corporate Asian women executives who shared stories of the risks they took and obstacles they overcame in achieving success as corporate leaders. This annual event highlights the role Asian women play in the executive suite and the progress we have made. This year's event also talked about our legacy, what we want to be remembered for and what positive impact we would like to have on others. The substantive program resulted in an engaged group participating in the Q & A session and even more questions and comments at the end when they lined up to meet the panelists. AWIB and Tiffany & Co. hosted Cocktails at Tiffany and Keys for a Cause. Members and supporters enjoyed browsing Tiffany's beautiful jewelry and accessories at Tiffany Wall Street and was able to support Asian Women In Business by purchasing special keys. 100% of the proceeds from the keys went to AWIB. Congratulations to those with keys that opened the lock to win beautiful Tiffany jewelry. The eleven (11) prizes donated by Tiffany were from the lock and key collection and ranged from a bracelet worth $300 to a diamond key pendant worth $3,200! Oh, AWIB member Natatia was the lucky winner of the diamond key chain. We thank Tiffany for sponsoring a wonderful evening. AWIB members and friends enjoyed a wonderful night of Sake Tasting and good conversation at the elegant showroom of Lladro. A sake master explained the varieties of sake and how it enhances the taste of food. While sampling the four different types of sake offered during the evening, the attendees took advantage of a special event discount on the extensive collection of Lladro porcelain figurines. Whether you're launching a new product or seeking to enhance your profile, effective public relations is essential. AWIB sponsored a timely workshop titled, Do it Yourself: How to Use Public Relations to Promote Your Business In Extraordinary Ways. Led by media experts Hanna Lee and Julie Huang, participants congregated in the spacious conference room of Weil Gotschal to learn how to create, build, and sustain the right "BUZZ" for their business. Hanna and Julie divulged their secrets to an effective PR strategy, and discussed ways to generate low-cost, innovative techniques to increase visibility. Participants left armed with the knowledge, tools, and confidence needed to achieve their business goals. In celebration of Women's History Month and in recognition of the accomplishments of Asian women in the legal profession, AWIB hosted Raising the Bar: Asian Women In the Legal Profession, a thought-provoking and frank dialogue on the advancement of Asian women in the legal field. Moderated by ABC's "Good Morning America" news anchor JuJu Chang, the event featured a panel of dynamic women who discussed their unique paths to success as well as leadership pinnacles Asian women have yet to conquer. The evening was a fabulous success as more and more guests filled the room, many of whom remained to mingle and converse long after the panel was over. We thank Weil Gotshal for sponsoring this event by allowing us to use their facilities and by providing us with catered food and refreshments for the reception. A reception was held in the Surrogate's Courthouse and a group of inspiring women who have made a difference received awards from the Comptroller. Lunar New Year Reception
AWIB members and supporters were invited to a private viewing of The Emperor's Private Paradise: Treasures from the Forbidden City, a fascinating exhibition of some ninety paintings, decorative works, architectural elements and religious works. This was followed by a reception in the Temple of Dendur. A special Lunar New Year dessert was provided to all by Executive Pastry Chef, Jansen Chan from Oceana. A fabulous evening of art, culture and good company, it was all a memorable evening.

AWIB and friends celebrated Lunar New Year at the MET. It was a fun filled day in which the young the old both enjoyed calligraphy, a tea ceremony, a costume demonstration, a youth orchestra performance on traditional Chinese instruments, a lion dance procession and much more. It was a delightful experience for the entire family, celebrating Chinese culture. View photos and the event flyer.
