Asian Women In Business Past Programs
AWIB is a not-for-profit membership organization founded in 1995 to assist Asian women to realize their entrepreneurial potential. Over the years, AWIB has added programs to develop the leadership abilities of Asian women as entrepreneurs and professionals. Since our opening reception in October of 1995, we have sponsored numerous conferences and workshops, provided individualized technical assistance, sponsored networking receptions and events and served as a support mechanism for entrepreneurs and professionals. Over 30,000 people have attended our sponsored events. 2013
Monday, May 20, 2013 AWIB members received an exclusive invitation to this celebration at the Metropolitan Museum of Art! There were diverse performances celebrating Asian-Pacific Heritage Month in the Temple of Dendur followed by a reception. Guests heard from The Honorable Shigeyuki Hiroki, Ambassador and Consul General of Japan in New York who praised the MET for housing one of the world's largest collections of Asian art. Guests also enjoyed a private viewing of Birds in the Art of Japan. The exhibition explored how Japanese artists have depicted bird species of every variety in their works. Highlights of the exhibition included masterpieces by Kawanabe Kyosai and Fukase Masahisa. Displays of paintings were juxtaposed with examples of modern and contemporary textiles, ceramics, lacquer ware, and bamboo art. Several objects from private collections were displayed publicly in this exhibition for the first time.

AWIB's Third Annual Raising the Bar forum featured prominent Asian women prosecutors. Every year, AWIB highlights Asian women legal professionals, and this year we delved into the lives of prosecutors who make life-changing decisions everyday to protect the public interest. Attendees had the unique opportunity to engage in a meaningful dialogue with a notable panel, who offered their perspectives on a profession in which Asian women are underrepresented. They discussed the challenges they faced due to their gender and ethnicity, and how they overcame those challenges by bringing their own styles and skills to a stereotypically "macho" profession. Now, at the management level, these women are paving the way for the next generation of Asian American prosecutors as their role models and mentors.

February 28, 2013 Brand Yourself for Leadership and Business Success Personal branding is a requirement for success. It is the only way to stand out with today's fierce workplace competition. Karen Kang, founder and CEO of BrandingPays LLC and author of Branding Pays: The Five-Step System to Reinvent Your Personal Brand, showed attendees how to do just that. Karen told attendees to embrace their power instead of shying away from it, which is especially relevant for Asian women who are more likely to brush off compliments than accept their true power. Often this prevents them from thinking strategically about their own personal branding. Karen exposed attendees to practical methodologies as a starting point to help them determine their own personal brand. She was also available to answer individual questions and to sign her new book! Attendees raved about Karen's "engaging presentation," which left them with "tangible examples" and a "strategy [and push] to start branding." September 26, 2012 AWIB led a private tour through Chelsea’s renowned art district. Guided by art expert and enthusiast, Michelle Loh, we visited several Asian owned galleries. At Asian Art Piers, we heard from artists Ruth Hardinger and Sook Jin Jo who challenged our notions of what defines art. The Sundaram Tagore Gallery featured Kim Joon’s newest works: self-expression pieces which allude to society’s attachments through an innovative use of computer graphics. At Miyako Yoshinaga Gallery, we saw the work of Brazilian artist Cleverson Oliveira. His use of everyday materials symbolize his belief in the value of accessible-to-all materials and ideas. A lovely reception followed at ArtGate Gallery with hors d’oeuvres from Kyotofu and wines from Vibrant Rioja and Frederick Wildman & Sons. Guests interacted with artist Ira Eduradovna who used a multimedia installation to capture the concept of home and Heesop Yoon whose awe-inspiring full wall installation was done using only black masking tape to explore the concepts of perception. All in all, the tour proved that Asian women have had a positive influence on the Chelsea art scene both as gallery owners and directors and as artists bringing their unique perspectives to light. The tour also provided an engaging networking opportunity for AWIB members and friends. View the flyer, speaker bios, and photos from the event here.
