Crains Online: Dentsu tapped as Chinatown tourism agency

The Lower Manhattan Development Corp. has chosen Dentsu Communications as the main ad agency for its Chinatown tourism and marketing campaign, which it is financing jointly with the September 11th Fund.

Telly Wong, the Dentsu project manager, has previously created successful campaigns for Chinatown businesses such as Pearl River as well as national brands such as Barnes & Noble. Nonprofit group Asian Women in Business will provide business support services. M. Silver Associates and Soury Communications will work on public relations.

Building upon various studies and reports on conditions in Chinatown, which was especially hard hit after Sept. 11, the campaign aims to implement proposed recommendations into a single marketing initiative. LMDC’s Chinatown Working Group will create a tourism advisory subcommittee to obtain input from the community on the direction of the campaign, while NYC & Co. coordinates the team’s efforts.

The LMDC and the September 11th Fund are each providing $1 million in funding for the campaign.
