The company (www.jjfalk.com) is based in New York and has an enviable roster of big-name clients, locally and globally. Since its founding in 1998, JJFD has grown to become one of the leading interior design firms in New York City. Headquartered on Fifth Avenue, with a full time staff of 20, JJFD is certified as a Woman and Minority Owned Business Enterprise and member company of USGBC – advocate and supporter of green building design practice.
JJ Falk was born and raised in Seoul, Korea. She attended the University of Hong-lk in Seoul, earning a B.A. in Architecture and a M.A.in Architecture. Her journey in the United States began in Denver, Colorado, where she received a M.A. in Interior Design from the University of Colorado.
After a few years in Colorado, JJ was ready to take on New York City. She worked at nationally recognized firms and over a 20 year period earned a sterling reputation for her design work. In 1998, JJ opened JJFD to further develop her unique creative design solutions and business philosophy while providing personalized services.
It was JJ’s excellent reputation that led clients to her and in an industry where the designer typically seeks clients, companies have sought her services. She states, “Clients often find me based on the reputation I have created during my long career or through referrals and that’s the desirable way I would run my practice.” She further states that “Our reputation is based on our ability to listen to clients and understand their goals, especially their critical schedule and budget requirements.” It’s no wonder she has attracted repeat clients from some of the most recognized businesses worldwide.
JJ’s work has received numerous awards over the years. She was recently featured on the front page and named one of the “Top Women in Real Estate 2011.” JJ was also named a “Real Estate Industry Leader” of Real Estate Weekly in 2010. Her work has also been extensively written about in a number of publications, including Interior Design, Contract Magazine, Real Estate Weekly, the Mann Report, Architects News and more.
When asked where she sees herself in five years, JJ says she wants to explore more options globally. Her advice for women entrepreneurs is “Try to Break out of the stereotypical characteristics associated with Asian women, such as being quiet and humble in nature. Be confident in your own strengths and skills and use them to be a driving force in your business.”
JJ also makes it a priority to give back to her community and to charity. In addition, JJ serves on the Board of the Korean Community Center, and is involved with various charity events such as those run by The Covenant House, NY Foundling Hospital and SHARE.
JJ lives in New York City with her husband and 19-year old daughter, who is attending Carnegie-Mellon University.
