Aasra, or "shelter" in Hindi, was created in 1990 to provide culturally sensitive services to victims of domestic violence in the Asian Indian community. The group hosts a 24-hour hotline, which provides victims with immediate support, confidential information and service referrals in several Asian Indian languages. Aasra also conducts bi-annual public forums for the Asian Indian community to increase awareness of domestic violence. Aasra is sponsored by the Federation of Indo-Americans.

The YMCA in Chinatown, San Francisco has served thousands of Chinese girls, women and their families for over 80 years. Currently, through our StAARR (Strength through Awareness, Achievement, Respect and Responsibility) programs, we offer Asian teenage girls support groups and classes on health, nutrition, healthy relationships and leadership development. A mentoring program will start in fall 2000. We also have an afterschool program and a coeducational summer camp for younger children. Adult programs include language and skills building classes and lectures.
